Potential earnings in the region of £68K per annum which is formed of the following elements:  

  • £44K basic pay per annum rising to £48K following the completion and certification of additional route knowledge competence for HS1.  

  • In addition, £19K of other payments can be earned (Additional Hours, Shift Pay, and Productivity Premiums).

The Role 

The objective of this role is to drive all types of trains to complete: 

  • Railway Maintenance (works trains and work units). 

  • Test Trains circulations (new Rolling Stock infrastructure tests). 

  • Operation of rescue trains. 

  • Pilot external trains running on the concession and Works Units having to run on terminals. 
     

Following successful completion of the Works Train Driver training, the driver will undertake additional route knowledge training, qualifying them to drive mainline diesel locomotives and pilot trains on HS1 between Eurotunnel, St Pancras, and Dolland's Moor. You will operate diesel main line locomotives for both the rescue of Eurostar, Southeastern, Freight Trains, and HS1 Infrastructure Works Trains. 

 

Principal Accountabilities 

  • Maintain a safe and effective railway system and a safe environment for maintenance to take place. 

  • Carry out functional checks of the Krupp diesel locomotives and configure multiple units whilst ensuring the Krupp's are in a safe, operational, clean, and presentable condition. 

  • Carry out light corrective maintenance on various Works Train equipment including Krupp locomotives and vehicles/shunting locos (e.g., topping up oil levels, light check, etc.) 

  • Configure and prepare works trains which involve the following tasks: Locomotive Driving (CMI, Schoma, and Krupp), Shunting, Works Train Module, pre-user checks, jet washing, and general activities that are of benefit to the team and department. 

  • Perform the duties of the Works Train Driver position in conformance with the working documents and meeting the requirements of the Infrastructure Division requirements whilst respecting the commercial service. 

  • Configuration, preparation, and driving of all works trains for Eurotunnel and HS1 railway maintenance and rescue requirements. 

  • Configuration, preparation, and driving of Eurotunnel test trains. 

  • Preparation, and driving of all non-commercial trains on the Concession. 

  • Configuration, preparation, and driving of rescue trains. 

  • Participation in the on-call roster. 

 

Qualifications and Experience 

  • Candidates must possess the appropriate train driver qualification and therefore this position is only open to existing qualified/competent main-line Train drivers. 

  • Educated to GCSE Level or equivalent. 

  • Candidates should have experience working in a technical railway environment, preferably with previous experience in electrical, mechanical, or pneumatics. 

  • Candidates must have an excellent safety and driver record. 

  • The ability to communicate in both English and French would be an advantage.
